Cardamom for Life

So I've been working on my Learn to Cook and also grocery shopping objectives. Last week when I was at the store I remembered that when I was making fajitas that we were out of a spice that was called for. Starts with a "C." So Jeffrey, who was with me, helped to select a bottle of Ground Cardamom. When we got home Larry thought that the bill seemed high for what I got. Then he saw it. "Why did you buy Cardamom?" then, "It cost eleven dollars!" and... we already have Cardamom in the spice cupboard. Almost the same, except that the label says "Ground Decorticated." And it still has the price on it. $7.49 It's 90% full. So this week I took the unopened bottle and the receipt back to the store. The lady at the service desk said "Sorry you can't return food items, health reasons." So now I own a LOT of Ground Cardamom. I told Timmy that someday he will get some when he gets married and sets up a home of his own. I looked up cardamom in Wickipedia. I learned this: it is used as a food plant by the larva of the moth Endoclita hosei. And that it can be used as a flavoring in Turkish Coffee and Scandinavian baking. Does anyone out there have a recipe that uses a LOT of Ground Cardamom?

At first I thought your entry today would be about an electronic way to always send your mom a card. And then I thought maybe some bar or other establishment always carded moms to make them feel young again. Anyway, never heard of cardamom until now.

Kroger takes back food items...OPENED food items. I didn't know that until last year when I was behind someone in the customer service line and she returned 2 different OPENED food items - one because "it just didn't taste right" and the other because she thought she'd try this new product and her husband didn't like it. I was FLOORED! I mentioned my disbelief to the customer service rep when it was my turn in line (I was buying a Megamillions ticket that obviously did not hit the jackpot) and the customer service rep said that they get returns like that ALL the time and Kroger just eats the cost (or passes those losses on to consumers in higher prices). Too bad you didn't buy your cardamom at Kroger. - Heather

I'm making steak fajitas tonight. Into the salsa will go the spice "cilantro", which I like to buy fresh & snip up. It smells heavenly, like lemoms! Into the the marinate for the meat will go "cumin" spicy like chili powder, use sparingly. I will tell you some funny "goof-up" cooking stories when I see you! I've plenty!

I did look up the recipe to figure out what that original "C" spice is and it was Corriander. Which I also looked up on Wickipedia and is another name for Cilantro. I should have written it down, or I should have shopped at Kroger!

There is a wonderful bread that you can get at the Kaleva Cafe in Hancock, Michigan. It has cardomom in it. So now when I bake some breads, I add a little - less than 1/4 tsp. But I grind it myself with a mortar and pestle so it is probably stronger than pre-ground. I think it works best with white types of bread that are a little sweet, but I also use it on whole wheat. Try it.. you'll like it. You may just use up that cardomom if you use it in lots of bread for the next 50 years! (I've had my cardamom for 10 years and it is about 1/4 gone.) It sure smells good, though.
